It is envisaged that postgraduate medical training takes place in as many hospitals as possible. This is a move away from concentrating the training in the two teaching hospitals at Korle Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals. To ensure that all trainees are given a firm and uniform foundation at the beginning of the training, all residents will spend the first year of their training in established training institutions, the teaching hospitals.
The remaining two years of the structured Membership programme for many disciplines will be outside the teaching hospitals, in institutions with the human resource and appropriate physical facilities and equipment.
A centre gets accredited for training when certain criteria are met. These include:
- Number of in-patients in the institution
- Number of out-patients seen in a year
- Consultant and Specialist Staff: Qualifications and experience
- Specialties in the institution
- Supporting clinical services relevant staff – Pharmacists, Laboratory Technologists/Technicians, Physiotherapists, Social Workers, Dieticians, and Radiographers.
- Number of Doctors
- Diagnostic services
- Library facilities
- Academic activities in the institutions.
Accredited centres do not have to provide training in all specialties. Therefore certain hospitals may be expected to provide training in only their areas of strength. Accredited Hospitals are subject to periodic review. Those that fall below expected standards will have their accredited status withdrawn.
